To apply to be an S.M.A. Lay Missionary, consider whether you meet the following: Faith: Catholic, with a strong faith commitment and a desire to live out your missionary calling in African missions at the service of others. Evidence of Christian maturity is usually seen in the practice of your faith and participation in your current worshiping community. Age: Between the ages of 23 and 50 years old (negotiable) Marital Status: Single, or Married, both without dependents Immigration: Valid U.S. Status (unfortunately, S.M.A. is not able to arrange U.S. immigration) Education: Completed college/university or have qualifications in your area of expertise Health: In reasonably good physical and mental health for mission, as determined by physicians Availability: Free of legal problems, large financial obligations, duties for the care of others, or recent major life changes (such as a marriage, a divorce, a death, a religious conversion, etc.) Personal Qualities: Sociability, common sense, flexibility, openness, adaptability and a sense of humor! In striving to live the Gospel, be non-judgmental and unselfish and have a capacity to empathize with others. A willingness to live in community and work as a member of a team. Commitment: Willing to commit to six or seven months of Formation and Orientation, and two years of service, plus three months of re-entry, fundraising, and mission outreach. Also, an openness to longer-term commitment, or even the possibility of permanent membership, if that becomes appropriate. |
