Ghana is on the coast of West Africa and is known for its rich culture as well as its tropical climate. Currently our Missionaries serve in the Diocese of Cape Coast and in the interior. ACCRA The large capital city of Accra is on the Atlantic coast. For several years our Missionaries have worked with the Hope for Life project for the disabled. This project seeks to help the disabled to develop their sense of dignity and to function as independently as possible, including through training and small business projects. Our Missionaries have supported these efforts for adults by pastoral ministry, facilitating the needed care and opportunities, encouraging the staff and administration of the project, and assisting the local informal elementary school by teaching and providing materials. In mid-2008 our missionaries were called to other ministries, but these worthwhile projects continue and we may again have the chance to serve in them. In the past our Missionaries also worked in Accra with literacy projects for market women, Bible study and ministry to those with leprosy, and with cultural events. BUDUBURAM S.M.A. Lay Missionaries also worked in Buduburam, a refugee camp for thousands of Liberians outside Winneba, a few miles from Accra. Here efforts were made to help connect refugees with medical and social services as well as to listen to their stories. Assistance was offered to a school for deaf youth at the camp. This camp is in the process of being downsized, as many Liberians return to their country and the UN reduces its assistance to them in Ghana. No U.S. Lay Missionaries are now in Buduburam. CAPE COAST In mid-2008 a Lay Missionary began service with an Ecology project to help raise awareness and encourage projects of caring for the earth as a moral and religious value. Headquartered in Cape Coast, the programs are taken to various locations in Ghana. This project has been operating for some years under the direction of S.M.A. Fathers and it welcomes the assistance of our Lay Missionary. NKORANZA Also in 2008 a Lay Missionary was assigned to Hand in Hand, a residential project with handicapped youngsters in rural Ghana. Young people with disabilities are assisted with housing and food as well as educational and self-help activities. This project is operated by an international team and also has outside volunteers.
