For about three years we were unable to send Lay Missionaries in Liberia, due to the lengthy civil conflict in the region. For many years before that our Missionaries served in Liberia and with Liberian refugees in neighboring Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) where thousands had fled the fighting. In early 2007 we returned to service in Liberia and we hope to continue there in coming years.

CAPE PALMAS

In the southeastern corner of Liberia is the Diocese of Cape Palmas. Our Lay Missionaries have served there in the recent past, in the towns of Harper, Pleebo, and other places, as well as the neighboring region of Tabou, Cote d’Ivoire. In Cape Palmas they worked with refugee relief, healing and reconciliation programs, with the schools as teachers and librarians, with the religious education of Catechists and Sister-candidates, with diocesan relief and development programs, teacher training, computer literacy, health care, agriculture projects for the leprosy center, and school reconstruction. They have also had much administrative and development involvement with Kambou’s Angels, a project for marginal youth which seeks to develop their job skills and educational level while also teaching them cultural and religious values.

In 2003 our Missionaries ended their service in the region for the time being.  However, before too long, we hope to return to service in this beautiful, rural part of Liberia.

MONROVIA

In the past our Lay Missionaries served in the large coastal capital city of Monrovia. In the Archdiocese of Monrovia they worked with trauma healing programs for young children, health and maternity care, public health education, and teaching.

In 2008 two Lay Missionaries moved to Monrovia.  One teaches at Mother Patern College of Heatlh Sciences, which is within the larger Stella Maris Polytechnic Institute, a training college for young adults learning professional skills.  The other Lay Missionary is assisting with development of the Archdiocesan website, as well as accompanying youth with their spiritual and social development.

GBARNGA

In 2007 one of our Lay Missionaries began service in the Diocese of Gbarnga, in the interior of the country not far from the Guinea border.  We have had opportunities for service alongside the Consolata Sisters in Ganta with persons afflicted with leprosy (Hansen's Disease) and their families, as well as in various other pastoral situations as the region seeks to recover from the war.  A scholarship program was also begun for a large number of youth in the area.  While these projects continue, we currently do not have a Lay Missionary in the Diocese.
