In 2004 our Lay Missionaries began involvement with the nation of Tanzania, in East Africa. Tanzania is a largely rural and peaceful country of plains and savannah, with both Muslim and Christian residents. Our Missionaries serve in the Diocese of Mwanza in northwest Tanzania near Lake Victoria,. MWANZA In the medium-sized city of Mwanza, on the Lake, our Missionaries have been involved in parish and youth ministry and in outreach to girls and boys at risk from the pressures of poverty. Poverty forces many people to look in desperation for unhealthy sources of income. Our Lay Missionaries began projects with street children, and also helped with construction of needed buildings for the local church and missionary efforts. Currently a Lay Missionary is ministering with young children at a project for HIV+ children and their families which was begun by Maryknoll missioners. DIDIA Didia is a small rural town about two hours from Mwanza, in the Diocese of Shinyanga. It has an S.M.A. mission and large secondary school run by the Salesians of Don Bosco. In the past our Lay Missionaries taught in the school and offered related ministry to the youth. At this time we do not have a U.S. Lay Missionary there.
