The headquarters of the S.M.A. Lay Missionaries is in the United States, and those serving in the administration and development aspects of the program are located in the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. At various times there have also been a few placements for Lay Missionaries in African-American communities or in Africa advocacy, in the Archdioceses of Washington and of Newark (N.J.) We hope additional U.S. or Canadian ministries will develop in future years.

MARYLAND / WASHINGTON D.C..

Recruitment, Formation, Placement and Re-entry of Lay Missionaries are organized from the Formation Center in Takoma Park, Maryland, which is just outside Washington, D.C. This is also the location for the general offices of the program and for Mission Education and Development efforts. The Leadership Team and staff reside there, including several Lay Missionaries, an S.M.A. Father, and employees on the staff. Candidates also live in the Formation Center during the Formation program.

At times in the past some Lay Missionaries have served with the Africa Faith and Justice Network, a coalition of missionary groups that seeks to analyze U.S. and international policies toward Africa and to advocate for Africa in Washington D.C.

NEW JERSEY

Previously some Lay Missionaries have served in pastoral ministry to the neighborhood from an S.M.A.-staffed parish in Newark which has historically served African-American Catholics. They have done evangelization, youth ministry, and visits to the home-bound and elderly, as well as participation in other parish ministries.
